Expert says captured dolphins 'loved to death'
Friday, November 10, 2006
Speaking at last week's international cruise tourism conference in the
Cayman Islands, one US scientist said that captured dolphins were being
"loved to death" by their captors.
Dolphin biologist Dr Naomi Rose, who has studied dolphins for about 20
years, said:
"It's ironic to me as a biologist and as an animal lover that people want to
be close to these animals but they're not paying attention to the dolphins'
point of view.
"They're not allowed to haunt, which is a primary motivator for them, so
basically what you've got is an animal that's being loved to death."
According to Dr Rose, dolphins are captured or born in captivity and then
confined to an area that is not in their normal social groupings.
