THE HOUSE committee on natural resources has approved a bill declaring as a
protected area the Verde Island Passage between Mindoro and Batangas, which
reportedly contains the largest concentration of marine life in the world.

Batangas Representative Hermilando Mandanas said the committee passed House
Bill 5919 declaring the Verde Passage Marine Corridor. It will soon be
presented for plenary approval.

Mandana said legislation was needed to protect the area since Southern Luzon
was fast becoming an industrialized region with power plants, oil
refineries, ports, mills and other facilities now fronting Verde Island and
Verde Passage.

The best measure to balance industry and environmental preservation would be
sustainable development and protection of this marine corridor via
legislation, Mandanas said.
