Sea cow found dead off Samal island

Peñaplata, Samal Island (MindaNews) – A sea cow, locally known as "dugong"was found dead in Talikod Island here early Friday, and believed to havechoked when trapped in the fish nets around the area, fishery managementofficials said. The sea cow weighed 300 kilograms and was measured 2.7 meter-long and wasbelieved to be nursing a calf. It was found near the shores of Dapiavillage, in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Talikod Island by three fishermen whoalerted officials of the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos)'s Fisheriesoffice. It is the first time that the death of the sea mammal was documented here,said Roberto Aquino, the Department of Environment and Natural Resourcesofficer-in-charge at the Igacos sub-station. In 2003, Aquino told MindaNews,another sea cow was reportedly found dead near a beach in Talikod islandbut was not documented.
