Cameroon Sinks Fake Reef to Lure Fish

YAOUNDE - Cameroon has sunk an artificial reef off its Atlantic shore tolure fish back after a huge rock used as a breeding ground was destroyed tomake way for an oil pipeline, the official Cameroon Tribune reported onThursday. The water around the rock, not far from the port of Kribi, once teemed withfish and local fishing communities protested that their livelihoods havebeen threatened since it was destroyed four years ago. The artificial reef, sunk 4 km (2.5 miles) offshore, consists of an oldbarge laden with concrete and adorned with used rubber tyres designed toprovide an ideal breeding and feeding habitat for fish. "We are responding to persistent complaints from local villagers whocomplain that since the rock was blown to make way for the pipeline, theircatch has been dwindling," the Tribune quoted Prosper Nzali as saying onbehalf of the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company (COTCO).
