sperm whales seem to be "wait and ambush" predators. this was observed by whalers long ago as well as by modern day scientists. whalers would see sperm whales dive, a hour or so later the whale would surface very close to where it had dove. researchers (mostly off the azores) have recorded sperm whale dives and found that the whales make a certain pinging noise as the descend, when they near the bottom the pinging changes and the whale becomes fairly motionless. while at depth, there is another kind of pinging as the whale sends our sonar waves to observe the area around him while waiting for its food to swim near.
