An exhausted humpback whale has been rescued in the waters of Knight Inlet off the central B.C. coast. The rescue effort began when a prawn fisherman told fishery officials Sunday that a young humpback whale was entangled in about 13 traps set up for the weekend's prawn opening. The marine mammal monitoring group Straitwatch, local fishermen, and coast guard and fisheries department employees spent Monday getting the nets and buoys out of the whale's mouth."The whale is now completely free of gear, which is really important," said Straitwatch's Doug Sandilands."It's a young male, so it keeps growing."If any of the gear stayed on the whale, there's a good chance it would've grown into it and caused infections."After being freed, the whale reportedly sat on the surface for a couple of minutes before swimming off to the west. The Vancouver Sun Canwest News Service
