Unusually early humpback sightings in Hervey Bay

WHALE season has arrived unexpectedly early with the first sighting yesterday off Kingfisher Bay Resort's jetty on Fraser Island.
Jill Perry, who runs Hervey Bay Whale Watch with her husband, Brian, thought that after 23 years in business she was over getting excited about whale sightings.
But, she said, after receiving the first call of the season yesterday morning - about a month sooner than expected - she still felt a buzz.
“I heard it over the radio and we headed straight out,” she said.
When the Perrys started out in the '80s, the first sighting was late in August and tours ran from early September.
“It's unusual this early,” said Mr Perry, who now starts tours from July.
General manager of Tours and Marine, David Hay, was the first to spot the whale.
“It was great,” he said.
“They were right off the end of the jetty at Kingfisher … I think it was a yearling calf and her mother.
“They were just cruising along. It was absolutely beautiful.”
The whales were moving south past Ungowa off Fraser Island.
“These are the first of 7000 to 8000 to come up to the Bay over the next seven months,” Mr Perry said.
“This is as far south as you'll ever see them in the Straits.”

The Perrys said whale watching in Hervey Bay was unbeatable.
“What we've got here is unique,” Ms Perry said.
“They're in migration mode.
“For two days or three to four weeks whales themselves choose to rest and play in Hervey Bay.”
